Biography“Painting is an attempt by the artist to capture the created world on canvas.” John Cogan tries to do that very thing, painting the landscapes and wildlife of the American West in a unique style that has become known throughout New Mexico and the Southwest. He works primarily in acrylic, a paint he believes is most adaptable to his style and subject matter. He concentrates on color and the effects of the many moods of light found in the created world.
John did not formally study art in school, but concentrated on math and physics. He attended Texas A&M University and Rice University, where he earned his Ph.D. in physics in 1981. But his first love was always painting, and in 1982 he left his position as a geophysicist with an oil company to pursue art full time.
John has placed a number of paintings in the TOP 100 of the Arts for the Parks competition and has completed a number of pieces for public institutions in New Mexico. Among them is a 60" x 48" painting commissioned for San Juan College, Afternoon at Echo Amphitheater, which now hangs in the foyer of the Henderson Fine Arts Building. John’s paintings are in the permanent collections of Citizens Bank in Farmington, Burlington Resources, and Raymond James Financial Inc. of St. Petersburg, Florida. His work has been featured in a number of publications including “Southwest Art”, “Art of the West”, and “The Majesty of the Grand Canyon”. His biography is included in “"Who’s Who in American Art”, and “Who’s Who in America”.
John has written articles for “The Artists Magazine” and for “Art Materials Today”. In 1997 and again in 1998 John was the juror for the National Christian Fine Arts Exhibit, and in 2002 was the juror for the Farmington Museum Regional Show. His work is shown in galleries in California, Wyoming, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, and Delaware.
John has recently been commissioned by Wonderland Graphics of Grand Rapids, MI to paint a series of wildlife and landscape paintings for publication as open edition and limited edition prints.
